After having a break during holidays, it’s sometimes hard to get back into the swing of making work again. I decided to start by making some wee pieces on note cards using acrylic paint and ink, oil pastels, and using my very battered, dirty and blunt scalpel.

I’ve made similar work in the past but made a conscious effort to use more colour and vibrancy.

I referenced portraits of Victorian medical students in these pieces, picking appropriate faces which would fit into the composition and work with the shapes which rubbing the ink off the oil pastel made. To do this I used the most underrated tools, fingers! These are about 12 x 7 cm.
